Hi all, hope everything is fine at yours' side. It's has been a very tough year, but we pulled through with the grace of God. Not only I was made redundant six moths ago and managed to get a job starting from tomorrow onwards, there was a lot going on in my orchids collection. Recently, I re-potted my orchids into bark and charcoal because the roots were rotting and there was not much growth in all throughout summer. All my re-potted orchids are showing signs of vigourous growth since early Autumn. I am very glad, it feels like a blockage has been cleared. Things happening recently have made me re-think and reach new ideas. Although, it goes without saying that working hard pays off. I am on a very tough test patience-wise. Recently, I was so fed up that I could have skipped the whole orchid lot into recycling because of the issues I was facing keeping/growing them. It hasn't been a complete year yet that I have my orchids and they(including myself) have been through a lot. I see them putting out new growth and roots. I have the feeling I can help more, but I can't do anymore than leaving them alone now. They need to be themselves for a better result. All I can do is periodically check their moisture levels and mist. They have been poked and prodded for almost a year because of growth issues and not to forget, it was my first time keeping orchids. All I can say is a big thank you to the members of this forum. Without their generous support and advice, it wouldn't have been possible to come so far. I look forward to posting the pictures of the blooms as and when they arrive.

Gurgeet, I hope things continue to get better for you. There have been so many struggles throughout the world lately, and I hope we can all come out stronger. I hope you and your orchids have turned the corner on these struggles.

this summer season has bin absolutely horrendous in our (u & I) neck-of-the-woods 4 all the rainfall & fluctuating cool/cold temps. Even if all fear-mongering-2012-end-of-the-world-crowd r wrong it'll still stick in my mind 4 the wet conditions. Even our native oaks hav suffered with fungal infections due 2 bad soil root conditions. The impatiens family, much 2 many gardeners suprise who use 'busy-lizzies' religiously every year as summer bedding plants hav seen them wiped out with the 'damp down' widespread fungal infection. Its overwhelming how many folk UK wide had that 'mental-lightbulb' turn-on in answering their mystery of why impatiens hav faced such fate this yr,almost a relief until 2 seconds later realising their all-time fave is not gonna b anymore. The horticultural trade with compact multi plugplant trays wont stand a chance nxt spring with fungal pathogen seeing those closely planted trays as a raving birthday party. Agriculture wise will b horriffic 4 farmers.Hav u seen the corn pre harvest? acres will b just dug back in.

The orchid note, reflecting on ur post, its been almost a yr since a large percentage of my orchid collection was wiped out. Cool/cold wet conditions r fatal 4 tons of plants esp tropical epiphyte orchid exotics & terrestrials if 2 wet. 2day i did my systemic fungicide app 4 all indoor plants in light of what was advised on frantic search last yr latter 2 find answers & solutions 2 the unfortunate learning curve. Fans r on timers & tube lights hav been re installed.

In reflection of that incident atleast I know im ok with a few luxury purchases of phals knowing these are compatible and brassias as they enjoy the cooling breeze from fans on timers. I learnt the hard way and it was very disheartening at times, our climate is a significant factor in determining what is best from our perspective.

I dont regret incredibly high mortality rate faced last yr, every hobby & passion requires investement, Im not going to do the financial accounts for it though, that would b a major regret. I made the choice 2 splash out on a cross-section 2 much 2 soon. Theres alot of reassurance now that my little treats of phal species/ compact catts will hav a more probable positive future with me. Of all those i killed due 2 unforeseen climatic problems, i will never overlook the Catasetinae group. Catasetinae will b a specialised interest 4 me sooner or later. It must b love!

I agree that Patience Pays. Throughout the world and indeed here in the Caribbean it has been a very trying year with people loosing their jobs due to the financial downturn.
Stay positive, and I shall send you positive thoughts. Caring for your Orchids gives you a peaceful and positive way to pass your time.
Take heart, things will get better.
