Can I be sure of my id? Paph help needed:)

Hello everyone!

Well, I got myself a NOID paph. Couldn't resist the leaves. The lady I bought it from was very nice and send me the pictures of the motherplant when it started to bloom a couple of days ago. She told me she got this one and 3 others for something like 8 bucks at an orchid show because they were ugly and flowerless. I looked around and I identified it as Paphiopedilum maudiae "The Queen". What do you think?

There are so many paphs similar to this in color and form that it really is hard to definately identify it. Beautiful orchid no matter what the name is.

Thank you Bill! I guess I'll have to wait for about 2 years until mine start blooming, she sent me 2 tiny babies - well, leaves/plants small, but each plant works on the fourth pair of leaves so, I don't know. They grew a bit already since I got them, which makes me hopeful. It will be cool when I'll be able to post a pic of my own flower

I would say that it definitely has Maudiae in it but as to the exact spec. I don't know. Maybe go on line and compare your pic with the images on there. It is beautiful though, I have one which too will be blooming soon -for the first time. I love the album paphs.

Well, I went on line and checked the maudiae and "the queen" came nearest taking foliage into consideration as well. Dunno...I just fell for it even before I saw the pics with the flower

Yeah, I know! I actually spent more then a bob or two on a pair of lil buggers with no id because of that! Exquisite! They got a bit of cellular collapse on their leaves in the transport but they are quite perky now and growing

I wonder how old they have to be to become bloom size

I would say it is a maudie without a clone name as phapiopedilum can´t be propagated by meristem cloning to my knowledge. It therefore has to be a division if it is that particular clone... but I doubt as a division of an awarded plant will never ever be sold at that bargain price...
It is most certain a seed propagated plant.

If that is 'The Queen' it is perhaps the worst blooming of her majesty that I have seen. The proportions of the flower and the shape of the petals are off, and it should not be cupped as this one is. Flower size and quality in Paphs can be very dependant on plant size and vigor, so this might be very different if it was a large and well grown plant, but I would be quite surprised if it changed enough to end up looking like 'The Queen'. Internet pictures aren't a good comparison since at least half of the pics out there claiming to be 'The Queen' are mislabeled.

It is definitely a Maudiae-type, but there is no way to even be sure it is an actual Maudiae. There are dozens of hybrids that are virtually indistinguishable, especially in this green and white phase. Enjoy your Paph, it should be easy to grow and a reliable bloomer, but you have a better chance of winning the lottery than making a positive ID.
