Lc. Cariad's Mini-Quinee 'Angel Kiss' (Mini Purple x C. intermedia)

This is the second blooming for this plant - the flower has much better shape and a fantastic scent I can smell from a few feet away this year. I really love it! I've also included the first year's bloom for comparison; I find the maturing presentation fascinating!






The flowers themselves don't seem to want to open flat, but perhaps that has to do with this unifolate catt's experimentation with being bifolate this time around? (probably a phase )

Color is determined by temperature and sun levels. I find my blue flowers are very sensitive to conditions and my red cattleya won't bloom at all if they don't like the weather. lol Gotta love their "moods"...

This cross is made with a C. intermedia coerulea/trilabiate and a C. Mini Purple coerulea. The C. intermedia coerulea/trilabiate gives your flower the dark splashes on the petals.
Most of plants (and I mean most, maybe 99%) which have a C. intermedia trilabiate as an ancestor are not opening flat.
If you see in websites the splash petal orchids open flat, 99% are doctored up (flattened artificially) in order to make you buy it.

Tucker, nearly all my plants are mini catts, which I had started collecting because I have limited space as an indoor grower. But, I have come to appreciate having flowers that rival the size of the plant itself, and will probably continue to focus in mini catts for this reason

Connie, what do you find brings about changes in your blue flowers? We have had such bizarre weather this summer, that I'm not quite sure what it was that brought out the stronger color. Perhaps it was the torrential rain every few days? The sunny 90F days that in between rain showers? Moods indeed...

In addition to the color, though, I'm quite pleased with the form improvements. Last year's bloom wasn't symmetrical and never did manage to separate the petals or fill out their shape. I have heard of people tossing seedlings after disliking the first flowering, but it seems like the flowers can change greatly after the plant gets more established.

Ah, that makes me feel better, thanks Horst! I had been wondering if I had failed to provide something while the bud was developing. It is so interesting to see what traits get passed along and which don't!
