A bright little flower -- Kohleria

Received this plant in trade from a gent I know. Plant is doing "okay" but not as well as it should. I suspect my typically low humidity and/or having dried out on more than one occasion is likely the reason, though light intensity and temperature can't be dismissed yet either. The starts from a leaf cutting in my terr -- while not blooming size yet -- actually look better over all. But the main plant has given a flower or two here and there.

BTW, did you realize that some font colors are very hard to read?

Really? Hmm, the orange shows up very cleanly and legibly on my screen ....

low humidity? in michigan this time of year? shouldn't it be tropical and hot?

Ah but on those hot, humid days, I have the AC running as I do not do well under such conditions. And that does dry out the air in my apt. While our summers are indeed often just as you describe them, this has been a rather unusual one this year. While we have had some weeks of obnoxiously humid and hot (by our standards) weather, we have also had some refreshingly cool days scattered throughout. Today in fact, the weather is absolutely ideal, IMO. Currently it is about 65F (18C) -- a bit warmer if you are standing in the sun -- with RH of 62%, sunny and a nice breeze.

The plant is actually a rather small plant -- at least at this time. The flower is a bit over 1cm at its widest and a little under 2cm long. The plant -- from the top of the pot to the top of the flower -- is approx. 3 inches tall.

A few more shots for those interested -- I think these came out a tad better. The first two have a lot of backlight from the sun.



Would really like to get a decent macro one of these days ... this is the best I could do looking down into the "belly of the beast"

I've had good luck in my dry climate putting my smaller plants inside a larger pot with gravel in it to hold moisture. I have a miniature African Violet in a 2" pot that sits inside a 1/2 pint canning jar so that the top of the pot is just above the top of the canning jar. There is water under it most of the time and its done great, it even blooms for me. Maybe you can figure out how to provide a micro-climate for it?

I keep thinking I'll get a Sinningia (miniature Gloxinia, fixed spelling there!) and raise it that way. They are the cutest things. I had one years and years ago. The ones I had are very similar to your flower and closely related. Now I have one more type of plant I like... hehe

BTW, I do agree that some of the lighter text colors tend to wash out on my computer and blend with the pale green background, esp. the yellow. Maybe I have a different background or something?

that does sound nice. i grew up south of jackson near the irish hills. the summers were so sticky. the winters so bone dry and cold. i came to socal on vacation and never went back.
