Rhyncorides Mem Suranaree (Aer lawrenceae x Rhy coelestis)

A second plant of this cross is in bloom now. I posted pictures of the first plant some time ago. The flowers lean more towards the Rhyncostylis coelestis parent. What I like about this cross is that unlike both its parents that bloom only one a year, this hybrid blooms several times a year. The blooms have a nice fragrance like its Aerides parent.

I love this kind of colour. Plus the mode of flower growth looks somewhat similar to a Delphinium. I have never come across this type of orchid before, it looks very special.

This is quite a variable cross depending on the varieties of the Aerides lawrenceae and Rhyncostylis coelestis used. Colour varies from very light pinks and blues to darker shades of both. It inherits the 'spur' from the Aerides parent and the round shape of the coelestis. The spike habit is semi upright as opposed to the vertical spike of the Rhy coelestis and the semi-pendulous spike of the Aer lawrenceae.. All in all, I consider this a very attractive orchid.

That is very interesting. So is it your own unique cross? That is really cool! What growing conditions does it like?

No this is not my own cross. It thrives under the same conditions as the other strap leaf vandas. I grow mine in a small 3" open plastic basket with no medium and let the roots hang free . Water twice a day unless it rains.

This is a very nice orchid Yew, they were available from a nursery here but I didn't get any, silly me.

I love the color so intense deep purple nice shot Yew and the spike also very long..... awesome.

Beautiful luminous light violet. I have always been a sucker for vandaceous orchids with smaller flowers, like the rhyncostylis and ascocentrum.
