Cym spikes vs growths

I've noticed cym spikes grow from the outside of bulbs, rather than from the inside (between the leaves, as in oncs). But that's exactly where the growths come out too! Don't they all look like pointy green objects at first? I'm having a hard time deciding, so here's a pic:

looks like a spike but I find it's hard to tell at first. give it another week and you'll know for sure--the spike stays fat and round with a pointy tip, and a new growth starts to flatten out and the tip seems to "split".
