Possible Oncidium Virus

Hello..

I was just been feeding and watering my Oncidium Durham River hybrid and I noticed two of the older leaves have this peculiar v shaped spotty patterning:



I am worried as the patterning has a regular and geometric (V spaped) appearance..I have the sick feeling that this might be a virus?

The younger leaves are ok (the whitish marks are just residue from misting - I need to clean them).



Opinions on what this might be would be appreciated...

i am no expert on orchid virus, but i don't recall ever seeing this sort of look while reading up on them, most of the virus pictures i have seen show a definite ring-like circle shape, or actual dead spots, not just discoloration, and the discoloration i have seen shows a yellow patch... my guess is this is simply an older leaf, and at some point it got too much sunlight? the virus photos i have seen are the 'ring spot' and 'mosaic' virus. i'm not really aware of any others, but your orchid does not seem to have those two...

I have some odd marks on my Vanda and have been researching viruses. I have not seen anything that looks like yours (that's a good thing, right?) But of course I am not anywhere close to an expert, just a confused newbie!

From what i know, some oncidiums have patterns and is normal. Do you see this in all old leaves or how is it?

These spots are usually found on older oncidium leaves especially if exposed to high light levels. I would not worry too much unless you notice deformities in the bloom.

Hopefully it is normal, this pattern is on most of the older leaves.

Thank you, that makes sense actually because the spots did get worse in stronger light and since I have moved them to a more shady location..I feel relieved.

Thank you for the response. I think too much sunlight may have caused the pattern here - which is at least reversible! :-)

I don't remember who started the thread, but someone posted a picture recently of an orchid that had a pattern on the leaves. It was actually attractive and a pleasant change to solid green leaves. The look of yours appears to be natural and you may eventually see it happen on all the more mature leaves.
