    Default Prosthechea mariae

This is our Prosthechea mariae. Maybe it should make up its own genus because it is so unique. I saw another post in this forum with the same concern. Anyhow, I always think of a desert of green apples and cream. It has three growths, each producing a stem with three flowers, so nine in total this year.

Even as Euchile it doesn't get a genus to itself, but shares it with Euchile (former Cattleya) citrina and at least one other recognized species. You certainly have an excellent example of the species though, whatever name you prefer. Just don't call it Encyclia.

I guess I forgot to tell my little story about this plant:
I always wanted a Prosthechea mariae. One day five years ago when I walked into a store that sells garden plants and supplies for the garden in general I saw that they had a mariae mounted on piece of teak. It had a flower stem with three pretty flowers. I thought it was stupid to buy it from a garden supply store so I left with bad conscience. I knew if no one bought it when it was in bloom it was going to be thrown away. Two weeks later I went back into the store and asked where they had taken the mariae. It was in a dark corner without any flowers. I could still buy it but they didn't want me to pay more than a few dollars. As you know by now, I bought it and wow, it was a rewarding purchase. The best things in life are free (almost).

Good job Arne! Sometimes when you go to places like HD, and WM, you will finds orchids that are stuck somewhere in the corner ready to be thrown away.

A great time to make a deal with the GM even though most often than not, they won't have labels. But who cares?
