    Question Unsure of next step...

    Hi Everyone,
As you can see from my photos, my orchid seems to be doing well (I've had it for 5 years). I recently re-potted it into a bigger pot because the top of the plant was tipping with the old one, even though I put some gravel on the bottom to stabilize it. It has a new leave coming out and more roots too but it has not flowered this past year. It was flowering twice a year before that. Am I doing something wrong? Is the pot too big for it? Thanks much.

Welcome from Ontario, Canada! Looks healthy as heck! Did you change its location in the house?

    Thanks Chris! Hello from NYC!

I usually try to put it near my window during the day so it gets lots of light and the rest of the time on my coffee table. It's what I've always done. When it blooms, I tend to leave it more on the coffee table.

Maybe someone has other advice to offer but it's probably just getting used to its new home.

Oh, Ok. I just wasn't sure if orchids stop producing flowers at some point because the plant is old.

They'll keep going for a long time. My mother had one Phal for 15-20 years.

It's kinda what I'm thinking but in my experience and watching how my orchids grow, they seem to prefer crowded spaces. Take for example some of my Cattleyas in 8" pots. They seem to put out new growth towards the rear of the pots instead of the inside where there's more room. ... and that's where they have a tendency to bloom. So yes, it's possible that the new environment is too roomy ... JMO!

I have a lot of pots like that and here are just a few. But I wouldn't re-pot it again at this point in time!

Very healthy looking Phal! It looks appropriately sized to me (the pot that is). I think it is just getting settled in the new media and pot. The plant will flower when it has enough energy stored to support the flower cycle.

Leave it for awhile and let it settle into its new environment and then make sure it has a change in temperature to some cool to cold temps, many nurseries here in south Florida put them into big walk in refrigerators to get them to bloom. If you notice this is one of the few orchids that you can find all over the place in bloom year round, years past you only had them bloom after a winter period, that is when they started putting them into refrigerators to give them the cold weather drop to spark the growth of the spike and to be able to sell them year round.
