Vanda Spike Stalling

Princess Mikasa Indigo formed a spike jan. 5.2018. It’s now Feb. 18.2018 and the spike has 2 weeks till 2 months have passed. How can I help the spike along without further delay. It was cultured in a vase now hanging without. Water has been switched to distilled from municipal. Has this shocked the orchid and halted the spike?

Hi Brandon. Was it still in the vase when the spike emerged? If so, changes may have affected it's progress. I've had that happen to one of my orchids when I took it out of its normal environment during bud growth. Someone may suggest putting it back in the vase but I'm truly not sure. Not one of the experts here. I wish you all the best with this spike and hope it will continue its' development. The plant looks nice and healthy!

My experience has led me to believe that once you see buds start to form you DO NOT move the plant. I have found that even a slight re-orientation can lead to unwanted results to include even catastrophic bud blasting.

It is warm grower. Is that water droplets I see in first picture or sweet dew (or whatever people named it) produced by the buds to attract ants? If you are not spraying any water on the spike, so it is the sweet dew. From my previous experience, if there is no ants come and eat that sweet droplets, eventually it will be sticky and prevent the buds from forming properly. If it is water droplets, maybe nothing to worry about. Just a thought.

@Azizan how would I remove this dew/ happy sap the spike is producing? I want to have the best chances to get this Vanda to bloom.

I had similar experience especially for species V. sumatrana the stem about 2 inches refused to progress further with the same spot very odd and finally gone. Well within a week if the stem remain the same that is not a good sign. Fingers crossed for you.

@Zainal Abidin I unfortunately lost the spike. The past three days the buds started to dry and the vanda pulled the energy from the spike to the roots as I put her back in the vase. (Increased humidity triggered root tips to reactivate) I should’ve known better not to to move her while the spike was developing but I had just gotten a new display and was only thinking about the aesthetics.(moved from vase to hanger) I feel very disappointed in myself . Again I should’ve known better. You win some you lose some.
