Some spikes and stuff

Howdy Folks,

Just thought I would share the current state of the addiction since I was taking some pics.

This is the Phal that started it all. I tried a number of devious ways to kill it for a few years and eventually it suffered so badly that I decided to read up. So, it led me here too. Thanks for all your help, as now it finally spiked -

I got most as seedlings. This Gongora quinquenervis was a bonus plant, so I am not sure if it is previously bloomed. I grew the big bulb & now there are two spikes -



The Epidendrum cochletatum was previously bloomed (I got to even see the dried up remnants after receiving it in the summer). The new sheath has just been sitting there for a couple months but seems puffy lately? -


The Epidendrum parkinsonianum purchased BS has a lot of new roots and a couple longer leaves. Maybe it will dawn on it that it is blooming size soon?


This Psychopsis Mendenhall has just sat here for months. It is seems kind of dried out but I am afraid to water it more. I transplanted it after air drying the roots for a day or two as I read that would encourage it. I may have to start a separate thread but any ideas or just wait it out?

The light cart was all home improvement store stuff except for some of the bulbs. I think it was 1/2-1/3 the cost of a light cart. They are the really common metal wire shelves with the little collars that the shelves slip down onto. Get the wide ones or it is not worth it to have two fixtures. It is very straight forward to do yourself - I just used two shelves per light (there were plenty in the box and some of the Dend. are pretty tall) so that I have a place to put water trays and foil to keep the heat down when it is transitional (they go out for the summer). The top is open with a clip on circulating fan.




They also have shelves that are supposed to hang down from their track shelving units. I prefered to snap them into place like towers. There is not enough room under the lights when they hang. It was remarkable how well the locked in and the twisty ties are not even necessary. You need both bottom shelves to have them lock in, but with some flexing they go together like legos then.

Then I just got the medium low range fixtures (the SUPER cheap ones have very short cords, I go for the second step from the bottom). I alternate a verilux bulb with a daylight bulb in each. The chains were too long, so I made little hooks with coathanger wire to save a little space. The turkey pans are working much better than the baking pans (they rusted)

The aircone pots work really well for risers, but the tall ones have a large footprint. The shape of the bottom makes a funnel and keeps any water from sitting there. Plus the plant is locked in place and won't easily knock over. That is my little Renanthera BTW.

Re the beer: that's actually a Hefeweizen glass, not technically a Pils....but still loved by many. :-)

Possibly the most usefull aspect of the setup is the location with respect to the window. The plants on the left get a lot of morning light, but those on the right are totally sheltered from it. This is why it works well for a range of light requirements.
