    Default Alstroemeria species from seed

    Last year I was given some Alstroemeria seeds from a friend in Santiago, Chile. They were species she found growing wild around her area. She sent three species...all bloomed from seed within 10-15 months. I think of them as the poor man's orchid. This is my favourite, A. ligtu. It is a dwarf at only 6-8".

    This one is A. pallida. It grows 12-18" tall. I actually got this one to overwinter outside in my Zone 5 garden!

    Oh, and here is the third species, A. pelegrina. Like A. ligtu, it only grows 8" tall or so.

    The first is my favorite! I got a bunch of bulbs/tubers in trade once. Unfortunately none survived. Majorly bummed. I'm sure the biggest problem was because they arrived in late fall, I had to try to store them in my apt closet. Likely too warm & dry.
