My NYC trip in April 2007

Well, here are some of the photos I snapped while visiting NYC on my professional development grant. I have edited down most of the 'tourist' shots, but had to keep a few. Anyway, enjoy.

First up some orchid photos from the show. I will limit this to three or four photos...

Okay, we have seen lots of orchids in the other thread about the show, so on to some of my tourist shots...

First up: My former student who is now the Assistant National Director of Actor's Equity (can you tell I am proud!!!)


and here is a shot in the upper west side of Central Park. This is 'Strawberry Fields'. A memorial to John Lennon. Those are fresh strawberries and note the dendrobium orchids around the instrument


And here are a couple more park snaps: Bethesda fountain, a statue of 'Alice and Wonderland', and finally - Hans Christian Andersen & his Ugly Duckling.






Okay, only a few more - (I never want to forget some of these moments)
First is a photo of some art work on the Rockefeller Plaza Building. This sculpture, weighs something like 6 tons and is about 'communication' through the ages. Look closely and you will see the telephone lines, a guy with a camera, someone typing, and someone printing or writing on a pad. The guy in the back right between the camera and the typing guys is not clear to me what he is doing, but he seems to have something in his right hand/arm.



I am going to skip the photo of the Naked Cowboy because he is just scary, and leave you with a photo of the New Amsterdam Theatre where I saw Mary Poppins. Side note: The tap number towards the end of the show is AMAZING. A guy (Bert - if you know the story) actually tap dances across the proscenium arch. He taps up the wall, upside down across the top of the arch, and back down the other side. It was amazing. It was not the best show I saw, but it is really well done. The performers work their butts off in this one!

Oh goody! Bruce has bumped the NY trip...I've been really busy and never got to finish posting. I have a few minutes before I have to leave for a birthday party (100 years old!) so I'll try and get the pics in now.

First is the aforementioned Phrag caudatum. I could see a hundred pics of this beauty and they wouldn't be too many!

Then Lc Tahoe Rose 'July' AM/AOS. Followed by two Lycastes.

Now for Coelogyne ochracea 'Fishing Creek', and then a magnificent dark bulbo nymphpolitanum. Finally, Cyrtochilum macranthum. That was a huge plant, many feet across. I only snapped a small branch of it. Do you remember this display case, Bruce? You commented on which species vendor it belonged to, and how you weren't surprised it was so stunning.

Now for the people shots...

First is Qing and her husband John. Sorry it's fuzzy - not sure what happened. I had dinner two nights with them (lots of fun!) Then Qing and me and Qing's orchids.

Finally a shot of Bruce and his buddies. We were looking at the murals in the Rockefeller building, and there was one of Atlas painted on the ceiling. Bruce wanted to show me how if you stared at it as you walked across the room, Atlas seemed to shift his weight from one leg to the other.

It was pretty busy in the lobby (it was lunch hour), and I was afraid I'd walk into somebody if I tried. So Bruce was my seeing eye dog, and led me across the room while I stared up. It was quite cool. Okay, having now appeared 100% tourist, I thought what the hell...

So I laid on my back under Atlas and had Bruce and his friends stand over me, just in line with Atlas. At first they were all looking up at the ceiling, but I couldn't see their faces in the camera! So I made them all look down at me.

It was very funny! And Bruce's friend, Pat, on the right...well, he's just a little scary in a fun kind of way.
