Cattleya Carmela w/ Yellow Leaf

Doing weekly maintenance this morning, I came across this site. It has been on a North facing window directly on the sill. Any ideas on the cause? Is it watering or placement, or both?

I also came accross this on my Vanda. It is burning? I am concerned about the redish color right in the center of the plant towards the bottom of the leaves.

Hi , I would remove the leaf on the Catt. just above the bulb , then coat the cut with cinnamon to dry the edge . About the pot, it looks to big for the size of the plant .
The Catt. will need more light, east is good .
Not sure about the Vanda , is the area soft ? What kind of light has it been getting .... Gin

Sunburn seems unlikely to me in a North window, but my North window gets 0 direct light. So if it has been sitting in the sun enough to make the leaves warm, it could be sunburn. If not, next stop is roots. Try to see how wet/dry things are inside the pot, the top layer can be deceptive.


I have no experience with vandas, so maybe someone else has more to say/will correct me, but I think the coloring on the vanda is nothing to worry about.

Will work on the cata leaf. The sun hits them fron sunrise to about 8 or 9A, then again from about 5:30 to 7P.

Hm, I don't think that would burn, so maybe look for unseen dampness?

That catt leaf looks like it is on the oldest pseudobulb.
It is possible that it may just be old age and it is preparing to drop the leaf.

I'm not sure about the vanda discoloration. Vandas typically prefer brighter light than any other orchids and would take a serious amount of light in order to burn them.

Thanks. That is what I keep reading. They are getting the optimum amount of sun and shade based on everything I have read. For the last 3 weeks it has been hot and sunny all morning, rains hard for about 20 minutes at 3P, then sun comes back out causing unbelieveable humidity. A month ago we were having a major drought. My house is 80 years old, so the grass is pretty rooted down, elliminates the grass dying. We just did a 2 year gut and restore. All of my beds are new. They were looking bad. Now everything looks great. Bromiliads are making babies like crazy, and they are all new. Look at my posting Location, Location, Location. All of my orchids are growing quickly. These 2 things kind of scared me.

My Vanda burned a bit like that when I tried to wake it up after an extended stay in the box store. It just wasn't ready for it and I took it fairly slow.

Also, that is a lot of salt on the leaves of the Cat. A coating like that (also from the store) made my Dendrobiums drop several leaves.

Good salt/mineral buildup removal is a lemon juice and water mix, right? I can't remember the concentration, though....

You can use straight lemon juice or vinegar. No dilution necessary..just rinse well afterwards.

As far as the leaf...hmm..It looks like natural death to me. But these are in a North window, right? I've never been sucessful blooming even mini-catts in that kind of light. I say..up the light!
