Here is what the flower looks like a few days later. i think it has opened a bit more, and my coworkers say the vivarium smells like lemons. I can't smell it though, I suck at smelling and tasting. My coworkers gave me harry potter jelly beans, and they all tasted like sugar to me. The flavors were vomit, buggers, earthworms, other stuff.

Thanks. I can't shake the feeling that Im growing the plant in the wrong direction. THe stick is oriented vertically. SO the leaves are all perpendicular to the glass (they are in a horizontal position). But after seeing tons of pics of vandas, whose leaves are similar to this little jewel, I'm thinking I should place the orchid so the leaves point up, vertical. I don't know, the hook that came with the orchid only works by keeping the stick up and down and not side ways. Oh well, at least it still bloomed. The thing is, the bloom is facing down. I took the pics by putting the camera under the bloom.

So, all things must come to an end. The flower died and it actually fell off about two hours after I took this pic. I never detected the lemony smell but others did. Oh well. However, the good news, theres more on the way!!! You can see the next bud right behind the flower.
I found it like this this morning, and it looked like the it did in the picture from the last post on Friday. It whithered away quite suddenly.



So there we have it, from the birth of flower to its bitter end.

H. odorata is one of my favorite mini's. I killed my first one but tried it again -- 2nd time I put it in my terrarium. It found the conditions much more to it's liking there. It has bloomed off an on for a couple of years now.

Anyone happen to know what the normal "lifespan" of this one is supposed to be?

Mine has never had any scent that I have been able to detect

Can it have lots of light? My terrarium is for our turtles and they have UVB lights and heat lamps.... I would put it as far away from them as possible but....
Hmmm, I may just have to design a mini terrarium only for my itty bitty little plants I have yet to collect :c)

I would go for the second option. This little orchid likes it kinda shady and wet.

I put the fallen flower in a little jar. I opened that jar a little later and the jar smelled like a mix between lemons and something else not so pleasant. but the overall smell is good. Also, I wasnt able to smell the flower otherwise, so for those of you who wouldnt like the smell you probably wouldnt detect it.

Your my second favorite person for the week! I cant wait for the orchid show this weekend, I might have to go hungry and wait to pay summer tuition, plants are much more important than food and education!
