Phal spike questions

Hello. I recently purchased a phal and it is currently blooming and has a few buds still to open(hopefully.)

It also has a new spike that has grown from 6 inches to 10 inches with little mitten type things on it(buds?). Is this what will flower next time and does the one currently blooming die? I don't know what to do when it is done blooming. Cut it and that one is done or does that same spike bloom again and if so when? Do these bloom once a year? Sorry I am still learning.Thanks

A double spiker? Lucky You! When Phals bloom, the flowers last about 3 months on average. Even with two spikes growing, there isn't a problem. Your plant must be bustin' healthy to throw up two for you. Once it is done and drops the last flower, you can either cut the spike down to about two inches above where it joins the plant, or you can feel below where the bottom flower came off, running your fingers down the spike to check for bumps under the nodes. A node is a small piece or flap that covers where a new spike can grow out of. It can also grow a keikei from this area. The end result depends on what hormones your Phal is producing at that time. Many people cut the spikes to let the plant rest, it's really up to the shape your plant is in. If it is looking wilted or has root problems you will want to let it rest and cut the spike short. If it is healthy with no problems, I let mine respike to their hearts content. It's a personal choice often.

Connie is right, but if this is your first phal, then I would definitely cut the first spike when the last flower drops. You have the second spike which will be taking a lot of energy from the plant, so it would be wise to let it focus on that spike and not go for a re-spike on the first one. Once you get comfortable with growing the plant and it has proven itself healthy, you can consider letting the next spike branch.
