Cattleya Question

What I would like to know is,What does a plant do after its new growth has been nibble off ? I also have a couple of Den. that were chewed on.I have many Den. so I'm not to worried about them.I don't have many Cattleyas.Will it start a new growth somewhere else ? I can only hope.Any insite would be great. Thanks,Rich

Don't worry, yes you will get a new growth shortly. The base of most cattleya and dendrobium types have a few different spots where a new growth can come out. Be patient and soon you will see a new one popping out. I have a large cattleya plant that sometimes aborts small growths and always within a month there is another growing off the side of the aborted one.

I have a question about the new growth and when it aborts how do you know it aborts or not? Exactly what does it look like. Because I have some problems with my cattleyas they have black spots sometimes the new growths so I wonder is that what you are talking about.

Oh ... no that is a scale because I keep everything on my computer when I water then them the weight that they were and how much they weighed after watering them becuase I know just about how much till it runs out of each pot and try to get it right to there!!

Those pics look like burns. You need to move those plants into an area shaded a little better. It's a difficult thing to get the right level of light for blooming without burning holes into them. And with the change in seasons down here you can be moving them around alot to accomodate the change in strength of sun and direction. I am forever rearranging things.
The brown on the outside is okay to remove (in your one pic). It's almost like a shell around the developing p-bulb and can hold moisture and bugs. When the new growth is turning brown in the middle though you need to yank the squishy stuff out and cut back the growth. Make sure when this happens you tap a little cinnamon on the cut area to help dry it out and kill any bacteria. The black areas from burn will not hurt anything and unless the entire leaf is really badly damaged I leave it on. In a couple years as the plant ages, the leaf will come off. Until then you are stuck with burned spots.

Hey thanks alot but... actually I dont think it is because of the sun because I have these in a grow room for them but the light might be too strong for this because I seen the same problems going on in my green house out side so then I put a shade thing up and it seem to subb-side!!? But I will show u a picture of the room!

I was really mad to see that the local squirrels chewed off a 6" new growth on one of my cattleya.Not only did the plant kick out one new growth,but as you can see from the pic.there is two new shoots growing from the damaged one.There is another new one right next to it !! Maybe the little buggers did me my a favor ?? Happy plant,happy Rich !! Thanks,Rich

Wow Rich, that's fantastic! Your Catt bounced right back after the "attack". This is inspirational for me. The squirrels unpotted a freshly received Catt, chewed off the roots (all of them!) and sectionned the rhizome in 3! I found it on the sidewalk, 4 floors down ... I hope it recovers as well as yours.
