Fall/Winter care of Den. Kingianum

I bought a great one of these in the spring in bloom.(hybrid "Ellen") It is growing really well, but I know that these need some specefic treatment to get them to bloom in the next year. I have let it stay out where it has gotten cool night temps- 60's about 2 weeks. I am in Northern Virginia-the forecast says the temps going to low 50's this week, so I think I will have to bring it in soon. Should I reduce water/stop water? Somthing about bright light??? I would really like to get it to rebloom! Thanks in advance! Meg

They can handle pretty cool temps. I usually leave mine out until the nighttime temps drop below 45. I think it has to be at least 50 or below to get them blooming. Just do NOT leave them out if there is a chance of frost. Also, reduce water significantly. You don't want the pseudobulbs to shrivel up, but otherwise keep them pretty dry. Also reduce your fertilizer during the winter. They need a dry winter rest to kick in their bloom cycle.

Taking these plants only down to the sixties is nothing.For the last 5 months My plants have been outside and the temperature has never been above 18 degree C = 64F during the day and thats only this last week.The night temps have been as low as -3 C = about 28F.They have not been dry in this time as we had weeks of rain and hail.The light has been mostly full sun ,when it did shine.
