cold damage?

hi everyone.

just wondering:

exactly how much cold damage can a plant (more accurately, compot phal seedlings) take? can little guys actually kick the bucket from too much? what if the roots are ok? will they be able to kick out enough good green material to save the plant? will the cold-damaged parts turn to rot if theyre not excised? i normally would cut out the material, but since the plants are so young, im not sure.

They're more susceptible than their mature counterparts. If the damage hasn't hit the crown, they should recover, but they'll definitely be set back.

Kewpie, if you can, use a single edged blade to cut the damaged areas off, back into green, healthy tissue. Otherwise, yes, fungus and bacteria will have a perfect area to set up housekeeping and start invading.

BTW, how did they get cold damaged? Did a frost hit?

its not *that* cold in montana yet (though im sure in the coming weeks, it will be).

anyway, there were some phal compots on ebay that i couldnt resist--ive been on a compot and flask kick lately. i ordered them when our daytime temps were in the 60s and the nighttime temps were maybe 30s or 40s. with the packing, i would have thought for sure they shoulda been fine. woulda shoulda coulda, i guess.

thanks on the tip about cutting. i thought that maybe leaving the leaves on would give the little plants a better chance, but i guess the frozen material isnt good for photosynthesis anyway. anyway, i cut and dusted with cinnamon.

hopefully, some of the seedlings will survive the winter.

So the little guys got frozen during the trip?

You can't confuse frost damage with much else: leaves turn brown haphazardly, a side facing the cold or a chill wind bearing the brunt: the damage doesn't start form any specific location that would signify another probable cause: not from spots, or leaf-tips. One day, everything's ok, the next day, after damage from cold, half the plant has turned brown. There's no remedy or cure for the affected parts. As long as the cold hasn't affected the crown or heart of the plant, new growth will eventually take over and the plant will survive.

ive left as much of the leaves as i could.... some of the damage was pretty extensive.

im crossing my fingers that the cold didnt get to the crowns. positive thoughts....positive thoughts....positive thoughts.....

i wouldnt mind too much if yall sent some of those my way, as reinforcements.

well, i *had* 6 seedlings of phal brother peprideXphal brother pepride and 8 seedlings of phal brother peprideXphal sara gold. after cutting out all of the cold damaged spots, im not sure what i have left.
