Anyone Know What This Is?

I had to go out to move my car this morning, and stopped to take a look at some of our new plants. This little beauty just caught my eye. She's small, but with such vibrant colors. At first glance I thought it was an orchid (and it's growing on tall spikes like orchids do), but now I'm not so sure, and I can't get close enough to examine it more closely, without stepping on other plantings.

Whatever it is, it's just beautiful.

You are not only fast, you may be a genius. I just googled Spathoglottis, and that sure looks like these, other than the color variations. And if you're correct, as I suspect you are, it IS an orchid, and I'm better at spotting orchids than I thought I was.

In any event, I just loved this one. It's a true beauty, and I may just have to try to grow one in the house, so I can see it all the time.

It is probably a hybrid. There can be some strange color variations on some of these. A local big box store has these in the early Spring here...and a few years ago I almost walked by them without noticing until I thought, "WOW! What strange Phalaenopsis-looking flowers from a grassy ground dweller."

I think I'm going to have to call our landscaper and ask him to bring me one or two. I just went out to stare at it again. The colors are just awesome!!

It looks similar in color to my Spathoglottis plicata 'Sobert Tropical Punch' (Sobert is what it says on the tag--don't know if they spelled it right or not). I'm including a picture for you to compare. It may not be an exact match colorwise, but this thing had 3 spikes and not all of the flowers looked exactly alike anyway. Hopefully this helps.

yes, deffinitely spathoglottis!
also ask your dealer if he has a yellow one, quite rare.
just be careful when you plant it in the ground, just slightly cover the bulb or let it stick out a little, otherwise it can rot easily and very fast, happend to me but was able to save it.

Hi Ron,

These are actually in the ground. Hopefully, Letty knew what he was doing (although I'm not too sure about the guys who work for him) and they'll be fine. My concern right now is we've been having a lot of really heavy rain storms, and I read that they sometimes need a drying out period.

So far, everything he planted is looking great and blooming like crazy, so I'm going to stay optimistic about this beauty.

Does anyone know approximately how long the blooms last on these?
