i'm about 4-6 weeks into my orchid rescue. most were purchased for next to nothing from a big box store that tried to drown them. i unceremoniously cut off the rotten roots (which was most of them) and repotted in bark or phal mix.
mistake 1: didn't sterilize scissors and used the same ones on all the plants-no apparent harm from this noticed yet. also, didn't apply any sort of treatment to cuts.
mistake 2: i did not soak the mix before repotting.
mistake 3: i used packing peanuts in the bottom of the pots, so now if i try to soak the pot as you folks suggest, all my potting mix wants to float to the top of the pot and disturb my roots. my solution is to just pour water over them 2 or 3 times.
mistake 4: put the cats where they got about an hour of direct afternoon light (this really was a mistake-i didn't realize the sun came in there) and burned some of the leaves. so far this doesn't appear to be a fatal error.
mistake 5: applied fertilizer according to package directions on my orchids. i think this was wrong on several levels. primarily i should have weakened the solution considerably and i should have waited a little longer since they had just been repotted. i poured it over the leaves (according to package instructions) and damaged some of the leaves.
i pronounced the first orchid DEAD today, but, i really think it was gone when i got it and it just took it this long for me to give up on it. i have about 4 more in "intensive care".
i have about 150 orchids at this time and am expecting more (of course!) so i guess i've been bitten by the orchid bug! i'm in the southern u.s., so the weather is good here at this time, but it does freeze in the winter so i'm thinking about greenhouse. i've seen them made of glass, frames with hard plastic, etc. and i was wondering what is best for orchids. any advice would be appreciated.
also, if you can think how i will try to kill the poor things next- advice will be welcome!
