    Default Summer Vanda Joy

My summer vanda joy. The first pic is Ascda Crownfox Honey Gold 'Tangerine' HCC/AOS. This jewel has bloomed 19 times in 2 1/2 years and smells like orange blossoms. She is 5 feet from plant top to root tip. She's my favorite!!
The second pic is Ascda Princess Mikasa 'Rosado' (Royal saphire x coerulea) HCC/AOS. She blooms 2 - 3 times a year.
The last pic is a sale 'chid I picked up for $5 five months ago. She is Vanda tessellata 'Aurea' x Vasco Somsaks Delight 'Perclad' and this is her first blooming for me. What a surprise! Her blooms are only about one inch across and she smells sweet like a light perfume.
Big Red [Okaara Scarlet Queen 'Chile Pepper' (Renst. Queen Emma x Ascda. Yip Sum Wah) AM/AOS -aka 'monster vanda'] is in spike, as is Vanda Sansai Blue 'Acker's Pride' (Crimson Glory x coerulea) FCC/AOS. Love vanda summer!

Thanks, Margo. All I do is water every morning, tho sometimes I miss a day or two, and fert full strength with 20-20-20 (using a spray bottle) every 2-3 weeks. I'm so excited; this is my first 3 spiker!
Hang in there - where you live yours should go crazy!!

Thanks, Tami! I think they need stronger fertilizer... Or... I will just show them your pictures and tell them: that is what they are supposed to do!

I love vanda summer too. Except the two that I have are unhappy campers in the week of 103F+ temps we've been having!

Very nice. I'm going to try to follow your recipe but I may need to mist them more than once a day with this 103 heat we have been having.

I sure understand, Jeff. Most of June we were around 100 here. I douse them with the hose in the mornings, then use the mister with fertilizer every other week or so. They are a little harder to raise indoors, but some of them are small and I think they can be managed but I've never tried. I keep them in the garage in a southfacing window in the coldest part of the winter.

Your Garage gave me an idea about my back porch. My porch gets sun until noon and I have a ceiling fan running all day for our dogs. I bet that would be a great place for my vandas. Thanks

Hey, good idea, Jeff! Light seems to be the key for getting them to bloom for me. My neighbor has a very shady back yard and has couple of vandas hanging under a tent canopy that have never bloomed. There are also some varieties that like less light, like Darwinara Charm 'Blue Star'. It is a small vanda with fragrant blue flowers that blooms twice a year for me. It has neo in it's background so maybe that's why it likes less light? Anyway, good luck with your vandas; hope to see pics of your blooms soon!

    Tami

PS: yes, Sadie, isn't that incredible?? It's a happy bloomer I guess!
