R.Mueller Questions

I have a R.Mueller cross that I have posted pictures of before.The question I have is,the last new growth came out on a weird angle.This was up next to the edge of the basket.Now I have another new growth coming of the last growth.As you can see from the photos,This plant has been in this basket for many years.The only plus that I can see,is that the basket is made of plastic.Should I repot this plant into a new basket? Placing the plant off set so it can continue to grow in the direction it wants to go? Should I dare try to remove the old basket ? Or just drop this one into a large one ? When in doubt...I figure why mess with success?? I'd get a bigger box and set the other one in it. Of course...my method may not be the right one. I have problems with the floofies sometimes.

That is what many people do with orchids in baskets. Beautiful plant, Rich.

I would suggest the same as well. Put the old basket in a newer larger basket.

Nice growths. but I can not help with advice for this.

by the way, is it possible (or interesting, in such a case) to direct the growth of a new growth like that? Can that be tied or staked?

Rich are you sure you do not want to divide this beauty. If you decide to divide:
1) You can cut the newly developing shoot with the last two pseudobulbs, plant it in a new pot or basket and stake it so that it will grow straight.

2) I recently had my birthday, and one simply doesn't get enough presents.

I can beat yours, Amey. :>| My birthday is next mo.....Oct. 26. Since it is upcoming, rather than already past, Rich may want to keep it in mind, as well. lol. As you said, "one simply doesn't get enough presents". :>)

I did split this plant into two plants with five p-bulbs each.It wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be.Will the back p-bulbs produce new p-bulbs over time? I was able to save the old basket also.Time will tell if I was to hard on this plant. Have Fun,Rich

Good decision (Its not very late for a belated birthday gift hehe). Anyways the back bulbs will sprout new growths if and only if the recent lead and all newly formed (age 1 + year) pseudobulbs are removed. Also you want to check if there are any buds present. Usually each pseudobulb has 2 buds at the base from which usually only one produces the next pseudobulb, so this unused bud can sprout.

hey forgot to mention, stake the new growth from now itself, or else it will also dangle into uncomfortable angles.
