are some orchid roots supposed to die off after repotting

is some of the roots supposed to die out after repoting. somehow when i repoted i noticed that the roots the was still alive when i repote was dying off.

They may have suffered some damage. Damaging good roots is often unavoidable no matter how careful you are. That is why it is best to repot during a strong growth period...a healthy plant will make up for the damage by producing more roots. What sort of plant are you referring to?

i am refering to catts, when is the strong growth period..

By "strong growth period", I mean the time that the plant is producing lots of new growth, especially on the root system. Repotting while the plant is inactive is best left for emergency cases, as the plant doesn't recover from the stress as easily. When you see lots of green tips on the roots, they are actively growing. Usually, this coincides with new leads in the case of sympodials.

If the ones that die are on the oldest back bulbs then that is normal if on the front newest then not ,as cakedaddy said it is sometimes hard to re-pot with out breaking roots . I just noticed cakedaddy is from Sonoma County, gonna go cry now, I wanna go home

i learned my lesson the other day... while driving home my friend and i noticed orchids for sell and very cheap. well i bought some phals and found out the hard way why it was so cheap. i noticed one of them being loose so i pulled it up and there was only two roots on that plant, everything else was rotted away, the mix was also kind of old..

i bought one dendrobium for 7 and four phals for 5 each... i just hope the phals recover...man i just started raising orchids and i really didnt expect to be nursing plants back to life again. well i will give it a try....
