Every year around November we get very heavy rains here but in 2005 and this year we experienced exceptionally heavy rain resulting in floods. This year we have one of the worst floods in decades. The rains started on 29 Oct and by Monday 1 Nov all the outlying areas were inundated. The place where I live is on a little hillock about 50 ft high and is spared from the floods but half a mile all around us is flooded and we are completely cut off from the rest of the country. 12,000 people have been evacuated to relief centres. Luckily there has been only one casualty, an elderly German woman who was visiting her son working here. She, her son and daughter-in-law were swept away by the flood waters when they tried to get out of their house to reach higher ground in the early hours of Monday morning. Rescue workers found her son and daughter-in-law clinging to a tree a few hours later. Apparently the old woman was too weak to cling on to the tree and was swept away.
My brother who lives 30 km from me has now moved in with a friend whose area is not flooded but has to leave his car and house to the mercy of the floods. The current floods has not spared our neighbours in Thailand and Vietnam. It seems the situation there is much worse than it is here.
Yesterday I managed to go out and snapped these pictures.
