Tillandsia

I went out to see what my husband was doing out front yesterday. It has been really windy and a nice size Tillandsia had blown off it's perch in the big tree out front. My husband was getting ready to throw it away. When I realized what it was he was holding I got very excited as i've been wanting a couple to grow. While the big part isn't looking good, it has several "plantlets" growing off it.

In your area, I wouldn't expect you to have any trouble getting the pups to thrive.

Do you know if the mother plant has bloomed recently? My understanding is that after the mother blooms, she starts producing pups and gradually dies back herself. So even if the mother is fading, the pups should be OK. Hope to see more pictures later as they mature.

I have bromeliads and this Tillandsia seems to be similar. The middle is missing and icky looking...so i'd assume it already bloomed. There are a ton of tiny little pups hidden under the older one. I will be looking forward to seeing them bloom too...

I believe Tillandsias are a genus belonging to the Bromeliad family.

I'm thinking that this belongs more to the generic classification/family of the bromeliads rather than to its sub-grouping of tillandsias.

Connie, I guess your plant is a Tillandsia xerograhica, native to South Mexico and Guatemala. This plant is quite common in the nurseries, because of beautiful "silver" habitus and nice violet flowers. The species request as much as possible sunshine and not to much rain. In the nature it's growing on the rocks aor on the trees, in very hot and dry areas. If you keep your plant outside, I would protect it, during winter time, against any rain and keep dry.
It's correct, all bromeliads, after flowering, slowly died, but this can last for one year or more. In this time small pups grow and you can enjoy many new Tillandsias.
