    Default the Winter Thread 2010

Though winter is not yet officially here in the northern hemisphere, it has been brought to my attention that Mother Nature doesn't necessarily care about calendar dates. Had our first significant snowfall this past Sunday. Roads were bad enough that all the schools in the area were closed Monday and many of them were still closed on Tuesday. It was a beautiful snowfall, though. Here are a couple shots from my balconey of the apartment complex during the blizzard, and one of the pond area after the sun came out. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to adequately capture the crystalline sparkle on the tree as the sun shone on it.

oh man! that looks absolutely beautiful! i wish it snowed like that here, but ive only been to the mountains twice and played in the stuff. Mt Ruapehu is great for snow cause it sometimes falls at ground level (something like 2500 m abouve sea level) as the volcano is on a plateux.

Summer here now, and i hate it! its so hot and sticky, and my chids hate it too!

I do agree that Seasons ignore the calendar lately, so we have a cold and white winter for a long time even though the winter has not been officially launched.
I love walking through the snowy path, where absolute silence disturbing only creaking of the snow beneath your feet...and I enjoy when I can warm up my cold fingers on a hot mulled wine...
I think will be enough for the beginning, they promese us a new shipment of snow for tomorrow, so therefore will be quite a few opportunities to make new shots. And Paul - tnx for starting this threat.

About 16 inches of snow here so far and no end in sight. We are southeast of one of the Great Lakes and experience what is called Lake Effect snow. Humidity from the lake, warmer than the air, rises and turns into snow, dumping truckloads for over 100 miles in the direction the wind is blowing. No forcast catches it - but it is beautiful. Can not wait to bundle up, go outside and sit on the patio to watch the chickadees and the nuthatches and the woodpeckers at the suet feeder. Last weekend I could see turkey walking in the fields, they stuck out like sore thumbs with their dark feathers against the white snow, feasting on the corn that the pickers missed.

lucky, we never see anything like squirrels and woodpeckers here, simply cause we dont have em wild or in the country at all! =(

oh and that squirrel looks so comical branka! i wish i could expand that onto canvas and hang it on my wall........

After our horribly hot summer, the winter is welcome here in NYC. Been cold but only about 1/2 inch of snow so far.

Forest animals and birds were surprised by early winter with full of snow too: this squirrel is ready to pose for a handful of shelled, unsalted peanuts:

That is such a cute squirrel! They don't have hair on there ears like that at my house.

The snow pictures look great. We have a little snow on the ground, but we had a whole night of freezing ice so everything is slick! And its not supposed to be above freezing for a while....its crappy cause I still have to go up icy hills to feed & water my goats......oh if we would of gotten just snow!!!

    ....thanks for listening!!
