Noone here cares, but hopefully you orchid guys understand

So I'm fairly new to orchids, I've had mine for 2months, and they are flourishing! I've tried sharing it with the family and they have gotten to the point where I come in with an excited look and they immediatly yell "I DON'T CARE." But I find it so exciting that they are blooming and growing! Am I over doing it and being stupid or does anyone else get this feeling?

Also does anyone else talk to thier plants? I like to spend at least a few minutes going over them and talking a bit to them everyday...is this crazy? I'm going to continue doing it because I'm trying to keep my "savior complex" to potted specimens, but I'm curious if anyone else does it.

Hi Sarah! This is perfectly normal behavior for most of us on this orchid forum. Feel free to brag about your 'chids to us and post photos. We love photos!

YEP! I get the "why don't you just shut up" business as well. I don't get it any longer from the other half however....probably because I made a huge ordeal out of dumping a new "friend" because of their disinterest. That or my excessive rambling about the more science oriented points has gained a new follower. If your family can't appreciate your hobby, then don't worry about it...just take the time you would have spent telling them all the news and spend it with the plants. That's good for everyone involved!

Sarah I can understand you very well. First when I started with orchids everyone was soo exited, but as years passed by I noticed that people get bored, no one dared to say "I don't care" or something because of..... well the consequences LOL but I understand when people get bored and just show interest so that you do not feel bad. Fortunately my parents are also very much interested in plants in general and my mother is very supportive and herself a great gardener (shes the one who started me off with gardening) and hence I always have them to share my exitement with. My sister doesn't care much about orchids, but she loves photography and so she became the offical photographer of my collection. hats how I ge everyone involved hehe. As to the talking part, I believe in talking to plants. Late in the 60s and 70s there were numerous experiments done which showed a positive correlation between talking to plant and growth. Even if you do not believe in plants understanding you, there is more CO2 (food) for your plants when you talk to them LOL. And did I mntion, they are very good listeners !!

You are with a great goup of enablers here!! We love to tell the little details, share pictures, and get advice for problems. We will not say I don't care. My family doesn't get quite that mean about it. I get a lot of eye rolling and head shaking. They have threatened to kick me out if I get many more.....but, I doubt they mean it (I hope). I will be testing that soon when I go to my first orchid show. I can't come home empty handed now can I. By the way, this is not a hobby, this is an addiction. There is no 12 step program, medicines, or cure. Welcome!!!!

Thanks all! I do feel better. My dad is the only one really interested in plants, thats why I am, and he finds it awsome that they're growing but since I don't live with him I dont get that encouragement all the time. Papa and I are firm believers in plants can actually be more responsive then animals so thus the talking. It's nice to know I'm not alone and others are enduring. And just because I can't help it:

i wish you could "like" comments within this forum...lol.....Sarah i feel the same way sometimes. I tend to draw a reaction before people can give it. Knowing what they will think or say... Sometimes you can get people interested by relating orchids to them ie. alien-like, sexual co-dependency, or the flavor vanilla...haha....Im being silly again...its a bad habit :P....i grow orchids cause i enjoy them no matter what people do......and i learn about them so i can be on my "A" game ....hehe...and yes i think we all talk to our orchids.......Hallohmey gave away the secret
