Dividing cattleya

I just purchased a bloomless cattleya yesterday. There are almost 13 pseudobulbs and one new lead is emerging . Since the media is broken down, I am planning to repot it immediately. I would like to ask if it's good to divide the plant in to two or re-pot it without any division?

This looks like it will be very helpful to me, too--I want to wait until after mine has finished blooming. It NEEDS repotting--the pseudobulb with the big buds on it is way out over the lip of the pot, and someone did a real hack job on it before I got it. Can't wait to post pictures...

You can repot your catt and devide it into 3 set, just clean them and remove dead roots.

Hi JuanCarlo, congrats on your new baby. FME, before i divide or repot a cattleya, i would let it acclimatize for at least 1 week in the garden just to avoid transplant shock.

With regards to your original question, Juan, there is no right answer. It comes down to what is "best" for what you want.

If you would like to have a large more specimen-sized plant which will be likely to provide you with a large impressive floral display when blooming season arrives, then do not divide it. Instead, simply pot it up into a larger pot.

If, on the other hand, you feel that undivided it would take up too much space; or you wish to experiment with two different growing medias/methods (like mounted verse potted, or bark vs. rock, etc.); or you would like to have a division to sell or trade with someone you know; or simply would like to have two pots of this orchid to display in different parts of your yard or home then go ahead and divide it.

I've been wandering thru the Cattleya orchid pages (I've just bought several Cattleya Orchid babies and am reading up as much info as I can get) and would just like to say how very helpful all of the information is towards getting a feel for what their needs are. Just hope the day will come when I can post some pics.....
