    Default Dendrobium phillipsii, Philippine Orchids

One of my favorite native orchids in Mindanao because of its long lasting blooms, it has a faint fragrance that can be detected during cooler nights.

It doesn't need much care like fertilizing, as long as you mount them in a living tree or hanged in a basket full of coconut fibers.

Based from my own experience, I have 2 types of culture: natural (in situ) and potted.

    For potted:

1st layer - pebbles or crushed rocks. It will also provide weight and cooling properties for plastic pots/containers.
2nd layer - small shreds or chunks of Styrofoam (if available). It provides good drainage for orchids.
3rd layer - chopped tree bark accompany with small quantity of moss. Usually in tropical Asian countries, we used coconut fibers instead of tree bark.

For cooler countries like yours, during hot period there is moderate watering needed, and to improve growth often apply rooting hormones and orchid fertilizer. During its flowering season, canes become stiff and leafless and inflorescence started to appear. But sometime flowers still appear even the canes are not leafless. Frequent watering and stop fertilizing to induce blooming. When flowering season has already finished, let it rest for a month and then apply an orchid fertilizer for suppress growth.

As for tropical orchids especially epiphytes or lithophytes, they need a constant hot and humid environment and good ventilation.

Organic fertilizers are best for orchid species to nourished.
