Cool TAIWAN = HAPPINESS...please dont hate, but i have to brag!!!

just got back from my weekly trip to the weekend flower market...and boy do i have some bragging to do!!
i have been after a couple of my favorite dealers to find me a banana orchid...well, today I found one myself...and it turned out to be way cheaper than 'my guys' had been offering...so having paid way less than a third of the price i was expecting...i treated myself to a few others!!! now here comes the bragging...
as i said, the one i found was much less than 1/3 the price of what i expected to pay... so i only allowed myslef to spend up to the 1/3 mark...that said, i ended up taking home a good sized banana orchid, a younger one just because, an encyclias and a cut of a variation of Vanda Miss Joaquim...
    so take a look...

    now the really sick part...
in total, i spent 500nt dollars...that amounts to about $15US!!! i was expecting to pay about 45us for a banana orchid based on one i had priced previously...but instead i found this one for only 9us$, the smaller one was $6 bus she discounted it down to $4 AND threw in the vanda cutting for free! having saved so much i ran across the encyclias for roughly $1.75...
    im such a happy boy!!
oh and i will be making a separate post for the banana orchid!

I'm glad that you got a good deal for the plants.

I'm envious not because of the good deal you got but because you're in Taiwan which I am aware are making great strides and progress in the orchid industry. I've never been to Taiwan for a visit (just once though many years ago as a stopover for my plane coming from the U.S. to Manila via EvaAir) and orchid friends of mine who've been there tell me that Taiwan has really developed their orchid industry so well and is head-to-head with veteran Thailand in the orchid business.

Myrmecophila thomsoniana... it's from the cayman islands, well there are some other places that have myrmecophila as well but this one is specific to the cayman... the flower spikes are HUGE! many feet in length and the flowers are stunning with a very pleasant smell!!

We live and learn - so the Schomburgkia is now a banana orchid. Oh yes, we also have a coconut orchid; the Tiger orchid of South America which is not the same as the Malaysian Tiger Orchid; the Dove orchid of Panama which grows on the ground and the Pigeon Orchid of Malaysia which grows on the trees.........

Thanks Shane for the info. I must admit the pseudobulbs do look like bananas, though a bit shrivelled, unlike our Malaysian bananas.LOL

ya, it seems the nickname of banana orchid is all they know here in taiwan... 'xiang jiao lan' is what i had to go asking for, and if you say that with a bit of a wink wink nudge nudge it can imply something along the line of impotence...luckily i was dealing with professionals...but my non-orchid friends giggled a bit when i said it...my tones arent what they should be ;-)
