Lest we forget - 'Wild' Phal bellina and cornu-cervi

Recently we've had some real outstanding selected varieties and clones and line-bred Phal bellina and cornu-cervi, posted in OTF.

These two are jungle collected; the cornu-cervi by me more than 30 years ago from an area which has now been turned into a sugar cane plantation; and the bellina given to me by an old friend who used to work in Sarawak.

Yes, Shane, those were the days!! Alas a lot of my 'happy orchid hunting ground' have fallen victims to progress..... as I have mentioned the cornu-cervi area is now a vast sugar cane plantation; an area where Pecteilis susannae used to grow is now a settlement; what was once an orchid haven with the rare Phal fuscata and other species like Gram speciosum, Bulb medusae, Cym chloranthum, Aerides odarata, Rhy retusa is now a recreation park and the orchids have disappeared. Luckily the limestone hills where there are still small colonies of Paph niveum and Calanthe reubens have largely been undisturbed to date.

Thanks to Zainal Abidin and his post on 'Wild Orchids' I can still enjoy the rich orchid flora of our country.

Congrats both very pretty, Cornu cervi.......... 30 years calculated should be more that 10 keikis already produced by the mother plant am I right just guess.?

You're quite right, Zainal, but I have just this plant and another small keiki - the rest having been given to friends or exchanged for other plants. Btw this was collected near Padang Besar in what is now the Chuping sugar cane plantations.

Wow, You are great orchid grower and able to keep your cornu cervi survive for 30 years.

Yew, love the form and coloration on your bellina and how interesting the wild cornu cervi is.. What with the distinct lack of bars on the inner side of the lateral sepals.
