Blc. Mahina Yahiro 'Ulli' AM/AOS

Finally - a cattleya orchid with a beautiful fragrance! This is an amazing plant - 10 pseudobulbs, 2 new growths, and believe it or not, the photo below is of one bloom. The first has already passed.


I haven't the patience to really work with this flower on the camera, so these do not reflect the crystalline translucency of the bloom, and, of course, the color never does it justice, but this is the best I can do without a lot of rigging up off-camera lighting, etc.








Wish I could post the scent - a little citrus, a little lily, perhaps a bit lilac, but neither too light nor too heavy. YAY!

I'm sorry, but if this is Mahina Yahiro, it is not 'Ulli', or if it is 'Ulli', it is mutated or crippled. The only real resemblance is the color. 'Ulli' is a large, flat more or less conventional Rlc. hybrid. This is what the awarded flowers looked like:

Please don't be sorry - I have seen so many versions of both the 'Ulli' and the 'Missima' that I could well believe it is either or neither. I've seen quite a bit of variation in the shades of pink to lavender, as well as in the frilliness of the lip - some versions seem to have far fewer frills. The fragrance comports with the official description, but that's hard to convey in words. I took these photos very late last night and couldn't get the natural shape and color of the bloom right to my satisfaction, so perhaps, that accounts for at least part of your impression. What makes you think this one is "mutated or crippled"? I'm just curious. BTW, this bloom is 6"x6" - not small. Phillip has taken some other shots of it, so perhaps they will show it better.

What I was referring to is the extreme contortion and ruffling of the petals, a characteristic not exhibited in the award photos. If it always blooms this way then perhaps it is a mutation; if it produces flowers consistent with the awarded parent, but produces flowers with inconsistent segments from time to time, I would consider these inconsistent flowers "crippled". Yew's flowers in the link above are very much consistent with the award photos.

Thanks for the explanation - does your Mahina Yahiro flower more like Yew's? Or like any one of the 5 different ones on this forum alone, including BD's.

The color is wonderful and the floofiness is awesome. Whatever the name this orchid has, it is a keeper.
