Size of new Phal leaves

I thought this was asked already but I couldn't find the thread. I have several box store Phals that have all put out new roots and leaves. But the new leaves are a lot smaller than the orginal. Can anyone tell me some reasons for this?

Hi Nicki, there can be a number of possibilities, I am no expert but my little botanical knowledge-
1. Too much light, the main function of a leaf is to have a surface to carry out photosynthesis ie. provide food for itself, because your phal might be getting too much light, it isn't producing larger leaves.
2. Something affecting the roots might also affect the foliar growth (but there is a little possibility for this as some phals do look okay even though they have no roots)
3. A variation to your feeding habits might also affect the leaf production.

All in all, if its healthy and producing blooms, it might slowly get back to its original form; just my opinion

I wouldn't worry about the size of the leaves. You say that the plants are growing new roots and new leaves so apparently they're pretty happy. Commercial growers can provide the perfect temperature, light and humidity. It's almost impossible to duplicate that perfect environment in our homes. So it's quite normal for a plants leaves to come in a little smaller when we first take an orchid home. Good luck.

Yes I also think the plant is adapting to its new home. The real test is seeing if eventually it throws out a new spike. Which I'm 99% sure it will.

I have sometimes noticed with other orchids too that their first leaf or two on first arriving is smaller before they get bigger again.

It is simply adapting to the new conditions you are providing in your home. No worries.
