Sarcochilus is a genus. What species are you talking about? I don't think you can grow any of them outside year round without protection in Staten Island though.

Hi fxxy,

Without being species specific, best growing medium is an open bark with pebbles mix, optimum temperature range 50 - 85 fahrenheit, during the warmer months low light level say 30% with good air flow also keep the mix just moist during this period (drier during the colder months) and maintain humidity. Fertilise with blossom booster type fertiliser at 1/2 - 1 gms per litre of water weekly during the warmer months, and say every 3 rd week during the colder months. Repotting is generally undertaken in early Autumn once the worse of the summer heat has ended.

George, would you like to share some culture info on S. falcatus. Is it a pendant growing plant? Thanks

Hi Tom,

My knowledge of Sarc. falcatus is limited as I have only been seriously into sarcs for about 2 years: I mainly specialise in hybrids.

However, I do have a number of mates who have grown s. falcatus for a number of years with success and based on their recommendations I am growing my sole falcatus on the following basis:

As Falcatus (or also known as the Orange Blossom Orchid) is both epiphytic and lithophytic, and is located in rainforests growing on trees on exposed slopes and ridgetops along the eastern seaboard of Australia from Mount Finnigan in north-eastern Queensland to eastern Victoria and it favours situations of high humidity and air movement, particularly where breezes, mists, clouds and drizzly weather are frequent - I am growing mine on a mount (cork) together with a bit of moss. I grow it about 2 feet from the bush house floor where it enjoy fan generated moving air and I keep it regularly misted during the summer months, and weekly weakly fertilise during the warmer months and then about every third week during the cooler months.

It is a pendulous orchid, as indeed many of the Australian Sarcs.

I've just taken a picture of my plant for information purposes, I think it's happy, as the roots look ok, the leaves don't give a clear picture as this species has a leathery appearance. I've also included a photo of the flowers from a mate's orchid.
