A wonderful dark slipper orchid hybrid that for some reason is still not registered. I didn't stake this spike and it still turned out great. I love these dark slippers.

Really a nice hybrid, notice those white markings on the laterals, they are such unique, all the dark ones I have seen yet are a solid color, but this is very beautiful, just like the tips of a tigers ear.

Striking Paph, Bruce!

You know, with my little involvement with AOS judging so far, I'd have to say it's exceedingly difficult to predict what the judges are looking for - and what they aren't. When it comes to any of the vinicolor paphs, it seems that the darker, the better, but as for the other markings, I could generalize about clarity, evenness, rounded shape, size, flatness, etc., but it's hard to get a whole lot more specific. As Amey noted, the white petal tips are really different and very pretty, but the judges could very well see that as a fault - who knows. As the bloom opens, will the dorsal stand more erect than it seems from your photos?

Your comment about why the cross hasn't been registered yet brought all of this to mind - I don't, of course, know how new this hybrid is, but - Robert de Veer was registered in 2000 and has 3 AOS awards, while Macabre Wine was registered in 2002 and hasn't any awards yet But both grexes were made by the same person (or nursery, or whatever), so that same originator may well be responsible for your hybrid. I know the Paph. world is a pretty small one, and the great breeders know exactly what they're looking for when they make a certain cross, but you know, there really aren't any records for how many times different cultivars of a grex have been submitted for judging and, for one reason or another, weren't found awardable. I've learned a LOT more from the judges explaining why a particular bloom DIDN'T get awarded than from why they DID. And there's not a whole lot of motivation to register an unawarded grex! The paph I just registered hadn't won any awards and it was probably a good deal older than this one, so it just goes to show how random the whole process is. Throw into that how completely different-looking clones grown from the same flask can be, and the entire matter becomes infinitely complicated.

In the end, I have to remind myself that the AOS was founded for much the same reason as OT - to get orchid growers together to share their love of orchids, so the fact that you have such a beautiful paph to share with us is the truest reward of all.

Thanks, Maura. I actually know the lady who made the cross. When we were reselling orchids we did business with her. She is the same woman who made the cross for our Paph. RVO Blushing Dancer. Maybe I'll take this one to a show and see what happens. I will of course wait for the next blooming and stake it properly so that it has a better presentation.
