A beautiful catasetum, Mazlan!!! I don't know what's wrong with mine. It has produced only female flowers the last two seasons. I bought it when it was flowering ...with male flowers! The same thing happened to my pileatum (pink) but the white 'Icy Green' has been producing male flowers all the while.
Yew, just my guess, try putting it in somewhat cooler conditions, say 3-5 degrees cooler than what it gets. The genes that regulate the development of the male reproductive organs and petals (B class floral homeotic genes) are sensitive to high temperatures. Studies in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana have shown this, plants grown at 25 oC have normal reproductive organs, but those grown at 32 oC do not produce stamens and petals, just carpels. To note here that Arabidopsis is a subtropical to temperate species and the ambient temperature is 21-25 oC. It can vary for different plant species, for the Catasetums it can be a bit higher since they are tropical.
En Mazlan, (wrote a PM to you a motnh plus ago) the name for this cultivar is Catasetum redland black cherry, the vondor passed me the incomplete name initially.
Serdang Oo Oo is the variety of the jumbo pearl. catasetum redland black cherry is made from crosses between Catasetum jumbo pearl x Catasetum penang.
so for you case the correct labeling would be Catasetum jumbo pearl 'serdang oo oo' x Catasetum penang
by the way, glad to see that they are doing so well
concur with what Amey and Mazlan said, you can run this experiment your self, during when you notice the emergence of the spike, try putting it in a shaded area. for my setup, sunlight is less than four hours after that it is totally shaded but bright.
another reason for why a plant is keeping reproducing female flower it is because of stress (that is what i read from a cultivar sheet) but unless or plant looks awfully not doing well, i don't see this would be the reason.
what forum members had thought me is to use a aluminium foil to create a shade/umbrella over the spike to induce a male flower, i haven't try this method but i am running a similar experiment using a cone, made up of a paper, and just let the spike wear the cone hat. (feasible for my setup because it is shaded from rain)
by the way, you mention catasetum pileatum (pink)? is that such cultivar for a pileatum? or is it catasetum pileatum imperiale.
good luck in your experiment![]()
Looks awesome !!! Very nice almost like a dark burgundy pileatum.
Gorgeous!
Alex
Very beautiful Catasetum. Bravo.
