Got this orchid without a name. Can you help identify?

I got this orchid plant for my wife on Valentine's Day. Yes, this is the one that started it all. When I bought it, it was not marked, and I didn't care. It had about 10 beautiful flowers on it. Two weeks ago, it lost all but the last flower, but I'm so excited, because the stalk has 5, count them, five, secondary stalks coming off the primary. Can't wait to see the display in a couple months!

But now that I'm getting into this, I'd really like to know. I'm guessing (from comparing photos on Google) that it's either a Phalenopsis or a Vanda.

Please chime in with your opinions... And also tell me the field markings you used to come to your conclusion, so I learn how to do it.

It's a phal, anything past that is where I become of no help. One of the pros will come along soon and give some thing more to work with.

Yes, it is a Phal. With the hybrid Phals, unless you have a name tag, you're unlikely to find out for sure the name of the cross. You can name it whatever you want and just enjoy those beautiful flowers.

Yes, you have a phalaenopsis. Phals have the big floppy leaves like yours, and the loooong spike. Vandas have more narrow and numerous leaves along a tall stem. But you are right to think of phals and vandas together, because they are related. They are both in what we call the "vanda alliance", so that means they can be interbred.

Unfortunately there are sooo many hybrids without a tag it's almost impossible to ID.

What gorgeous Phal that is! And 5 secondary spikes is also very cool. My husband is also responsible for beginning my obsession on Valentine's day with a Phal. All orchids are beautiful, but there's just something about those leaves.
