    Default Dendrobium bullenianum in bloom

This is the first time my Den bullenianum is blooming and it has only 1 spike. The plant is still immature (just got it 3 months ago). I'm quite excited about it as I've been hunting for this dend for some time. The spike is very short about an inch or so and bears between 15 to 20 flowers, each measuring 3/8 inch (0.7 cm). The blooms are carried on leafless slim, upright pseudobulbs, that can grow to a foot or more in height. A well grown mature plant with numerous spikes is a very impressive sight indeed.

Oh, Yew! My first impression is of gorgeous, exciting photographs! Then I read that you bloomed this one within 3 months of getting it. Well done! I love it (even though it's a dendrobium)

Which of your cameras/lenses did you use? Can i ask what settings?

Thanks Maura. I used the Nikon D200 with the Tamron SP90 macro lens. As I took this pictures in the orchid house with a slight breeze blowing movement was always going to be a problem, so I had to use flash at the highest synchro speed of 1/200. To prevent flat on-camera lighting I use off-camera flash with my Nikon SB 600 and the on-camera flash as the trigger set at 1/64 power - this set-up gives quite satisfactory modelling light and allows for some details in the background (the leaves). Other technical details : ASA 200: f22 (3 stops over the ambient light). Oh yes, the SB 600 had a diffuser on to give softer light.
