    Default Neofinetia - now Vanda

I think a new forum section for "Idiotic Orchid Name Changes" could be of interest.
I haven't seen this published anywhere, I may have missed it but I would think growers would be having their say 'Big Time'.

According to the Kew List of Monocots, Neofinetia no longer exists, its now listed as a VANDA.

Yes, thats Vanda falcata but... in the RHS registry, its a synonym.

It would be nice if they could get their act together for a change.

Unfortunately not. I have just emailed the RHS to get clarification.

RHS is a horticulture society, that is not "Science"...
The KEW Monocot tries to follow the peer-review scientific litterature of Botany and try to evaluate what the consensus in the scientific sociaty is.

    A large difference!

But few hobby growers of orchids seem to understand that the family name represent heritige, and that is gowern most accurate by DNA and not the system invented by the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus (Carl von Linné) around 1750 in his master piece Systema Naturae!

I agree to some extent with what Magnus is saying. RHS and systematics doesn't go hand in hand. What we need is a clear clarification of the term "species" and "genera" based on genetic concepts.

The other main genus involved is Ascocentrum. All moved to Vanda.

I was going to try to be more mature about this change than I was about the sudden disappearance of laelia and odontoglossum, but seriously! I'm slowly gaining success with vandaceous types and one of my benchmarks for whether I can grow and bloom it has been that "asco----" tag. To me there is a clear enough difference in how they grow that a separate name makes sense. Same with odontoglossum--they consistently shrivel and pout at my place.

Pretty soon they're going to decide their isn't enough genetic difference in humans and reclassify us all as chimpanzees. That going to make dating really complicated for me.
