Phragmipedium Living Fire

This is a first time bloom for this plant. It was sold to me a few years ago as a blooming sized plant but it turned out that there were two young plants potted together to make it appear blooming sized. Anyway, I have finally managed to get it into bloom and I like it. Since I have two of these and I now know what the bloom looks like I might sell the other one and get my money back

Thanks Geoff. It really is that dark. I kept it very cool over winter so I guess that is why - perhaps.

Love this one. Have never seen one so dark. Should you decide to sell your spare I would be interested in buying it. Just hope the spare is the same as the one blooming. Thanks for sharing.

Susie - that's a stunning Phrag! I'm wondering a bit, like Geoff, about the color, though. Living Fire is a 2nd Generation cross - Sorcerer's Apprentice (longifolium x sargentianum) x besseae. I've seen an enormous range of colors for Living Fire, the most intense being a crimson red - the sargentianum/besseae influence if both are deeper than usual reds. There is a Phrag. Alison Strohm, or something to that effect, that is Living Fire x kovachii, which would be more in keeping with the magenta tint yours has, although the shape of yours make a kovachii in the background seem unlikely. Could it have sedenii in it? I would be far less unsure if the vendor hadn't already taken the liberty of combining two smaller plants and labelling them "blooming size." Whatever it is, it's gorgeous, and a serious keeper. I'm not sure I would part with either of them, especially if there turns out to be a question in the parentage.

I have taken some pics of it. It is definitely a Living Fire, the shape and the colour conform to that parentage. I have noticed today that it is isn't as dark as I previously thought, maybe it hadn't opened up completely before I took the picture but have a look and see if it is still causing confusion. The other one that I have of these is also in low spike so in about two months it should be blooming also!!

Here it is with my MDC. It is darker but not as dark as the previous photo.




I shall try to get an accurate pic but I am only using my camera phone and my little cheap digital so it is not always possible to get a perfectly honest representation. Anyway, it is still a beauty and I still want to sell the other one as I want to make room for other Phrag. hybrids / species in my collection.
