In about mid June I got a couple of cuttings off an orchid in my university's greenhouse (Plants 1 and 2), and I also ordered a couple of cuttings from a nursery (plants 3 and 4). I had hoped for a 25% success rate so that I would have at least one vanilla orchid live![]()
Plant number 1 - Successfully rooted in June, but has never grown any. It's potted in orchid bark mix, and kept with plant #3 (More on it's condition later) I re-potted it in late August and the root has continued to grow, so I've held onto the plant, but will it ever grow up instead of down? It only has the one node and there is always a white film on it which I believe to be an insect issue. (The parent plant had several issues with these guys.)
Plant number 2 - Went home and one of my parents' dogs ate it...
Plant number 3 - This is the one I need assistance with mostly, when I first got it, it grew fairly quickly, doubling in size. But I took it home for a short while when I went on vacation, I don't believe it got watered properly, nor did it get the light it needed. This was in early August, it has not grown since, and the tips of the leaves had browned and began to curl. I have been watering it every few days, and misting everyday. The tips are still slightly curled, but are doing better than where they were. I'm wondering if there is any hope for this plant? It did have root rot and I cleaned off all the roots and had to cut off a few that were covered with the fungus. I haven't checked to see if it has regrown the roots it lost. It is also planted in bark.
Plant number 4 - Went to my grandparents, it has grown slightly, but not a whole lot. It sits in a south facing room that gets a decent amount of light, but their house is always a little colder. This one I believe is in a mix of potting soil, peat moss, and perlite.
Here's where they sit:
There's a small light on them, and there's a purple pitcher plant in between the two. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
