And Bring those unwanted Phals back home here. Unfortunately i'll be in hong kong this september.

And just look at the second picture with those unopened buds. I bet it will be such a great view when all buds are in bloom!!!!

Usually 15 days after the New Years . The coming Lunar New Year day falls on 19 February 2015.

But thats the day where everyone is busy at the Temple expelling bad luck for the year to come.

Do they throw out every phal on that day or some do throw them out a few more days more.

any suggestion where i can buy paph, phal, phrag, dendro in Hong Kong (other than the flower market)?

Usually people throw away flowers if the become withering, as early as one week after New Years Day. But orchids (mostly Phal) can bloom longer. I normally buy orchids from a few orchids vendors in the flower market

Great save Luke. I just can't believe that In HK and Taiwan, Phals are discarded after the New Year. One of our members, Shane used to rescue them from the garbage bins after the New Year too. My son who lives in the New Territories rescued 6 kumquat plants and grew them in his compound and now has a ready substitute for lime and lemon whenever he needs them for drinks or for cooking ( he uses plenty of them as he cooks a lot for himself and his friends ). I think I should make it a point to visit HK after the Lunar New Year !!! But I normally visit HK during Late Nov or Dec so that I can watch the winter migration of birds at the Maipo Nature Reserve.

Try staying in Hong Kong for the New Year. You can make a trip to southern Taiwan and Kinmem before or after the festival. These two places are popular bird watching spots. I've just come back from a 4 days trip to Xiamen and Kinmem.

I spent Chinese New Year in HK 3 years ago and spent a lot of time at the Flower Market just days before the New Year. Been contemplating visiting Taiwan for some time but my priority will be Guangzhou the next time I'm in HK as my ancestral village is there in Huangsha (Wongsa). Would love to meet up with relatives there.
