I took my poor phal to the orchid farm and the owner was really nice. He wasn't expecting me (he emailed me he would be open, but I didn't call to say when I'd be there oops). Anyhow, he took the plant out of the container, snipped off the roots, wrapped it in moss and cheerfully said, "This will rebloom next year. " So I explained to him the lighting conditions of my home, that many people spend lots of $$ trying to achieve the lighting I get. He said he would even trade for another type of high light plant. As we were walking along, I'd see a plant I recognised and say, "Wow so that is what a so-and-so looks like in the flesh!" and "Look at the buds of that nobile dendrobium" and other orchid talk stuff. He seemed excited to talk to someone who could actually identify the difference between one orchid and another. I probably spent a good hour there having orchid talk , Shane was being really good and was SO excited to be there. He kept saying "Mommy look at the purple orchid, look at the green orchid, can I tell the orchid guy green is my favorite color?" I told the owner I was priming him to be an orchid lover. So after I decided to go with an octopus orchid, Jim (that is the owners name) was asking me what I did for a living. I told him I work with high needs kids, but orchids are my real passion and I would like to have a greenhouse operation of my own someday. He then asked if I would be willing to work 4 hours a week. I asked him if it would be for the learning experience ( kind of like an apprentice). He said I knew alot already, more than most of his starting help has, and he would pay me in plants. WHAT??? Did I hear him correctly?? Yup, in plants. I could live with that. Heck ,I would do it as volunteer work for the learning aspect of it, but to get paid in plants? I told him I would think about it (I couldn't let him know how excited I was) and email him back. YAY! I can't wait to start, be in orchid heaven 4 hours a week lol!
