    Default Dendrobium formosum var giganteum

It's been quite a while since I posted any pictures of my orchids. This is the third rebloom of this Den formosum var giganteum since I bought it at the beginning of the year. This is a small to medium plant with large flowers. The mature pseudobulbs are 7 inches tall but the flowers measure 3 3/4 inches across (9.5 cm). There are 4 flowers on a very short spike. The flowers are supposed to be fragrant but mine only emits a barely discernible fragrance.

I agree with you with regards to the 'normal' form of Den formosum - they can grow to a very large size; but this particular variety, the var giganteum is dwarfish by comparison, mostly not exceeding 1 foot in height (at least the ones I have seen in cultivation).

Love the pureness of colour of this formosum! Very sharp photography... Do you use a macro lens?

No, not for this picture as well as the other pictures of bracteosum and Airy Peach. For these pictures I was testing my new lens, the Sigma 17 - 50mm f2.8 OS HSM , which I just bought specially for the coming trip to Nepal. It can focus quite close, to about 10 inches. I'm very impressed with this lens; very sharp at all apertures and focal lengths and even to its 'macro' mode. Most important for me is the OS (Optical Stabiliser) which allows me to handhold to 3 stops slower without the dreaded camera shake. I was able to handhold to 1/30 sec and get sharp pictures for the majority of the shots and even a few usable shots at 1/15 sec. Btw this picture was shot at 1/200 @ f8 outdoors at the side of my shade-house.

This Sigma lens wil be go-every-where lens and I think it's the ideal travel lens.

    Thanks for your comments.

Nice photography under a natural light. The texture and colour of the flower are clearly defined. Love this white dendrobium.
