Two blooms have opened so we dragged this outside and I got a few pictures. When more flowers open I will have to get a few more of the flowers since most of the ones from today didn't turn out well. I was singing "The Monster Mash" as I snapped pictures of this one and the Schomburgkia.

Thank you...I have been strutting like a proud momma all day. lol I forgot to mention, there is a terete vanda or two also growing in there. One of the terete types is nearly as tall as the Arachnis and also still hasn't bloomed. This spring I will be adding some time release fertilizer to their diet.

Hey folks, I have a new cutting of this baby and about 1/2" of bare stem at the bottom before the first aerial root. My concern is should I just set this in my basket as is or should I at least enwrap in moss or moisture retentive substrate? She was pricey and about two foot tall with 5, 2' long aerials. She looks healthy, no flowers and just a cutting. I'm in Fla. Any advice is good advice, thank you.

To first start rooting Arachnis, it is best to give them some medium rather than bare-root. They will also grow bare-root, but given their very quick growing rate, these require a lot of nutrients and water. The aerial roots, once in contact/buried under moist organic matter (e.g. bark etc), will act as feeding roots and become pale and swollen. If you use moss, do not place too much, the roots still need to breathe. The feeding roots are how they extract nutrients very efficiently. Papilionanthes and semi-terete vanda hybrids do this too. It would be helpful to know your growing conditions (indoor / outdoor / greenhouse).
