Broken Spike Oncidium

I mounted this Oncidium to my mango tree in October. Got super excited when I saw that it was in spike a few weeks ago and even more excited when the buds started to open last week. I went outside today to see no spike on the plant, but saw it laying on the ground. It seems to have been hit by a falling branch and broke off. It's beautiful nevertheless; I've put the broken spike in a vase on my desk so that I can enjoy it while it lasts. Hopefully all the buds will open! P.S. Any specific name or ID that I can attach to it?

Hate it when that happens! At least you can point the finger somewhere else. Last week I snapped a new branched spike off one of my Phsycopsis. Only myself to blame.

At least it didn't shear the whole spike, but I know how frustrating this is. I have some phals mounted on palm trunks; they are spiking freely. But the dumb fronds keep shedding and snapping them off. Grrrr.

Oncidesa Sweet Sugar is as good a guess as any, but there are dozens of look-alike cousins so there is no way to be sure. It should grow like a weed and give you many spikes at once within a couple years.

Nicely done. At least you have a little color on that mango tree, the problem with my mango tree is all the droppings from the flowers now dying off but the mangos come next in about 2 1/2 months.

Jack, I'm already seeing lots of tiny mangoes on mine, and with most of the blossoms gone, my allergies are not acting up quite so much. But the end result in the summer is so worth it!

I have been putting my huge Ansellia Africana outside for the day so it can get more sun. I was gone for part of the day a few days ago, a perfectly calm, no wind day. When I came home it was laying on the stone walkway, the heavy ceramic pot smashed. The longest, nicely branching spike was bent, another sheath was just shaved off and the smaller spike was okay. I splinted the bent spike in hopes that it will heal. I could not believe it.

Bummer! I have learned the hard way myself. Now I put them on the deck itself as opposed to the rail of the deck. Not too much of a chance to damage at that level.

I managed to whack the top off my biggest phal, a Sogo Yukidian with (normally) 6" blooms. AGGGGRRRRRRHHHHHH!
