Cool Encyclia cochleata 'Green Hornet' In Bloom

This is the second time this guy has bloomed. I bloomed it the first time last August. It already has 2 new growth in progress. I will repot it after this bloom cycle is complete as it is growing, and getting full/tight, in a 3 inch pot. It spent part of the summer outside and loved it. The roots went crazy.

Nice job Harvey. Mine has been in continuous bloom since December 23rd with new blooms right after the other.

A nice example of the type, but Prosthechea (Encyclia) Green Hornet is a registered hybrid (cochleata x trulla). I hope someone didn't actually use 'Green Hornet' as a cultivar name for cochleata. It would be nearly impossible to tell them apart for sure.

So no usage of 'xxxxx'? Label is wrong then.

It is possible someone was misguided enough to tack 'Green Hornet' onto their legitimate plant of Prosthechea (Encyclia, Anacheilium) cochleata(um), but Prosthechea Green Hornet is a registered hybrid and it seems more likely someone made a false assumption and inserted the species name where it didn't belong. Obviously it isn't easy to see a clear difference. To me this perhaps has the more tailored appearance of the hybrid rather than the octopus arms of Psh. cochleata waving and curling in every direction. Maybe.

To me, this plant is Prosthechea Green Hornet. The plant & flower are not totally that of cochleata.
Too much yellow in the lip, the plant growth habit is wrong.
I would drop the cochleata completely. As Kirk says, it can be very difficult to tell them apart, to me it is easier with this plant.

Whatever it is called, the culture here is really excellent - such lovely clean foliage. There is a piece in the AOS mag' this month about the species, and talking about different forms of the lip - apparently all the ones from one place have a narrow lip, and the broad lip comes from a distant location. Worth finding and reading.
