    Default Epidendrum stanfordianum

So, after my bragging in another thread about how I haven't had any bug pest problems to speak of since moving my collection to the Keys, I've been attacked.
Had a fairly significant issue with thrips which is now back under control. I think I had also mentioned somewhere about suffering a lot of bud blast this winter and thinking it was a cold snap we had in Jan. Not what the issue was. It took some help from fellow growers here but we finally id'd the buggers and have dealt with them. I had no clue what I was looking for as in the NH GH I had never had them, although I had faced all the other usual culprits like mealybugs, aphids, scale.......
Anyway......with treatment completed the shadehouse is getting ready to explode with blooms again.
    Here is an old favorite.

They can sneak up on you, but at least you have it under control!

Nice flowers Leigh! Did the thrips end up being the issue with your brassovola nodosa? If so, what did you use to control them?

    Sheryl-
yes probably. The nodosa bud development issue was one of the first instances of blast and flower development problems I noticed.
Treatment was with Orthene. 2 tbsp/gl of water applied with a sprayer once/week for 3 weeks. I am told that a quarterly application will make them a non-issue in the future but that sales pitch has yet to be tested and confirmed by yours truly but I will do it and see if it is true. The stuff literally stinks so protect yourself with gloves, eye protection and a respirator but after the 3 week cycle of use all my buds and new flowers are developing normally again.
My only concern is I never liked to keep applying the same chemical so they can't develop a resistance to any one tool you use so I may look into another product to alternate with it.

Great demonstration of the "spiking from the base" characteristic of this species. Spelling correction: stamfordianum
