A pleasure to introduce you to one new orchid from the Philippines.
This is one among the 5 from first set of plants recently named.

Amy, thank you for giving us a preview of this newly named orchid... is this a recent discovery or a taxonomic reconfiguration?

This could be my downfall / uprise into the Spathoglottis addiction!

HI Bench,

This is a new species proven to be valuable in breeding flowering potted and landscaping plant. It has a new primary hybrid recently already registered in UK. It was a lot of work proving that this is new and I am happy to honor our country with this plant. I also gave a common name of UP Sandaan to honor the centennial anniversary of UP in 2008. This is also to differentiate it to plicata which is widespread but common internationally as Phillipine Spathoglottis.

It is a dwarf, multi-bulb, floriferous species. Its original publication here in the US had an sp novo in it when first introduced.

FYI, in literature you can find scientific name with these order:

Genus species name of botanical author ( usually for valid new species)

Genus species botanical author followed by ex second author
Those that had been validated eg with lacking latin in original publication

Genus species ( first author eg of species ) followed by author for new combination---
this is for plants say originally described as a dendrobium species but now accepted as Flickingeria

We have several candidates under study...we will have more!

Katie, you might take a look at Phal. Sogo Sweet for a nice strong yellow. I don't have it, but I remember admiring it recently.

Yes, there are now some nice yellow intergenerics of Phal alliance.

Doritenopsis Sogo Sweet is a progeny of Phal. Brother x Dtps Sogo Manager.
Registered in 2000 it now has 4 progenies. I have not seen the images of the new hybrid series but from the parents listed more nice yellow is expected.
16 th generation cross, a complex hybrid.

So you may look for Sogo Giant, Sogo Shito, Sogo Director too ( 2002-2005 registration)

My spath philippinensis is a species, and will most likely be a source of an orange Spathoglottis after several generations.

Hi Amy,

I was reading an article about another species today, Spathoglottis kimballiana, and although they were similar (they are both yellow) the lip seems to be quite different... (of course, kimba. is also found in Borneo)

However, is the shape of the lip the main way to differentiate the various species?

But, looking at pictures of plants online, Spathoglottis plicata seems very variable in it's lip shape and colouration... so either the lip shape is not the main differentiating factor or there are a lot of plants mislabeled.

Is the habitat of this plant known and is it low or high elevation?

Finally, where is the breeding of this plant being done? In the Philippines?

Hi Tim,

There are several yellow species recognized but they are distinguished from one another using different floral and vegetative characters. For Spaths the labellum shape is one, but there is a level of variation accepted. You are right that there is a wide variation of plicata ( though know as Philippine Spathoglottis) is actually widespread. But, many of those labelled plicata needs to be investigated further as some may indeed qualify as new varieties/subspecies or even new species.

Molecular techiniques, imaging, population studies esp in sity will help enravel this. I intend to work more on the genus when I am based again in Asia. This is actually a not easy genus to work on as there are natural hybrids, many named and unnamed articificial hybrids.

Regarding yellow Spaths, Spa. kimballiana is found in Borneo but the typical species is not found in the Philippines. Only two varieities which are endemic to us are recognized and they are different in the lacking of the spots, vigor, etc. Sad to say many images on line are mislabelled!

My philippinensis is distinct among many other species interms of its lateral lobe and midllobe labellum, claw, size and no of flower, absence of hairs,
size of the pseudobulb, form of the leafsheath etc etc. Its ally Spa gracilis is tall and has dormant stage( aside from difference is size, labellum etc). This plant do not have a distinct dormant period. Another ally elmeri is decidous and flowers without leaves while this is an evergreen.

This is the first described sp with 3 sections in the midlobe labellum margin.

Congratulations for naming the plant after the Philippines ! This article had already been published in POS September issue which also coincide the 60th Diamond jubilee anniversary of the society.
